So you walk through the center of Torreon, look around, admire the views...and under your feet, a few meters deep, the historical landmark runs. In Rome, tourists are willing to admire the remains of ancient sewers. But in Torreon, there is a huge irrigation canal that can easily be entered by an elephant and several buses. It's worth a look.
Welcome to the La Perla tunnel. The love of local people for this historical building is evident from the name – "pearl". No, you won't find pearls there. It is made of ordinary gray stone, not mother-of-pearl. Perhaps the name is related to water. After all, the canal served to irrigate the land, and every drop of moisture for Mexico at the end of the 19th century is expensive and desirable as pearls.
And now, in the equally hot Torreon, the pearl channel perfectly saves from the burning Mexican sun. You can move on after going down, catching your breath, enjoying the first minutes of coolness. You feel a bit like a smuggler trying to smuggle goods underground. The atmosphere is quite appropriate for this: it is dark, only dim lights illuminate the road, it is empty, strange sounds, rustles and the sound of water drops...and music. Yes, there are a lot of street musicians on the La Perla channel today. They love this place not for the abundance of generous tourists, but its amazing acoustics, of course.
Music is one of the reasons why there are a lot of couples. Young people arrange romantic dates there. Why not? It is romantic, quiet, and budget.
When the canal was drained, merchants, pharmacists, and book dealers quickly settled there. And this is a real paradise for archaeologists. There were found products from clay, metal, and even bones. Leather items were also found. These were mainly bottles from drugstores. Besides, there were whole boxes of products with stickers from well-known brands that produce soft drinks.
