Although the former Native American settlement of Cholula is considered a separate city, it is actually a neighborhood of Puebla. Once this place was an important political and economic center of Mesoamerica. It closely resembled the city of the gods Teotihuacan. Both cities were abandoned at the same time, and all of their inhabitants disappeared.

It is in Cholula that the largest Aztec temple, the Great Pyramid of Cholula, is located. It is also called Tlachiualtepetl, which means "man-made mountain."

As with other pyramids, the history of the Great Pyramid is shrouded in many secrets and mysteries. According to some sources, the construction of the pyramid began around the first century BC and continued until the eighth century AD. According to other studies, the beginning of construction began in the third century AD. However, both archaeologists are confused by its design, which consists of elements of two ancient civilizations: Teotihuacan and El Tajin.

The construction of the Great Pyramid is similar to a Russian matryoshka: one pyramid is located inside another as if it was completed at different times. Its total volume is more than 3 million cubic meters. Its height reaches 70 meters. Moreover, each of its sides has a length of about 400 meters. Inside the pyramid is a network of tunnels more than 8 kilometers long. And a Spanish church was built in 1666 on its top. You can climb to the top of the hill, which offers a magnificent view of Cholula and Puebla. You can use the staircase which is completely cleared of vegetation.

Archaeologists discovered the pyramid in 1910 as a result of landslides after heavy rains. Later, they excavated the staircases, platforms, and altars of the pyramid. Huge frescoes measuring more than 50 meters as well as full-size stone figures of people were found. For so many years, it had been hidden from human sight by dense bushes and grass. The locals mistook it for an ordinary hill. Today, the Great Pyramid is considered a truly precious monument of pre-Columbian America and the largest pyramid in the world.
