In 1920, the minister of the Church of Our Lady in Leon de Los Aldama, father P. Bernardo Chávez Palacios, had a vision. After that, he thought about building a temple in honor of Jesus’s Sacred Heart. That is how the story of one of the most beautiful religious buildings in Mexico began. It was erected only on the money of Catholics.
About a hundred years have passed from the moment of laying the first stone by the father of P. Bernardo Chávez Palacios to the date of its completion. The solemn ceremony of consecration and opening took place in 2012 with the participation of Pope Benedict XVI. He arrived at Leon de Los Aldama just for this.
This great work of art was built in the Gothic style under the guidance of several talented Mexican architects, from Luis G. Olvera in 1921 to José María Méndez Córdoba, completing a grandiose project.
Today, the Temple of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is a functioning cathedral with 2 chapels and a bell tower 13 meters high. Its main bell was made of bronze, tin, and silver in 1950. Its weight is about 2.5 tons. Unfortunately, its miraculous ringing has not been heard since 2006. Only electronic bells are used in the church. The central entrance doors are made of bronze. The Mexican sculptor José Carlos Ituarte González did it. The left door depicts scenes of the world creation and expulsion of Adam and Eve from the earthly paradise. The right door - the Descent of the Holy Spirit on the Virgin Mary. They are the largest bronze doors, describing biblical scenes. The central stained glass window, located behind the main altar of the temple, depicts Jesus Christ. The side ones - the Annunciation, Christmas, Calvary, Coming of the Holy Spirit, and the Ascension of the Lord. But the main feature of the interior is the marble altar. It consists of white and green marble, specially brought from Guatemala.
