It seems that there are only icebergs and the Arctic Circle in Nuuk, Greenland. So why are there so many athletes? Sometimes planes are filled with athletic people with huge backpacks full of gear. Other tourists do not understand what is happening. They look at the groups of athletes in surprise. And it's not just at the airport.
Nuuk turns into a real sports capital several times a year. The locals are used to the bright snowboarders and skiers who came to conquer the local slopes. However, among the conquerors, there are also those in sneakers ... tights, a light jacket, and a hat. They are what they are going to do there.
All these people came for a marathon: a race across the glaciers, mountains, and other surroundings of Nuuk. That's it!
There are several events related to running and hiking: the Polar Circle Marathon, the Arctic Hiking Festival, the extreme race "NuukKap". What a test for yourself and your body!
Cold weather is considered the norm in Greenland. Therefore, the organizers choose to conduct marathons in a relatively warm season: from July to October. However, sometimes, the feature of the race is to run on a crust of ice.
The Polar Circle Marathon is a unique competition. The route runs along the ice cap. The marathon takes place at the end of October. However, participants run on a dense layer of snow almost all the way.
They run not only during the day but also at night. This test befalls those who decided to participate in the extreme race "NuukKap". These guys have enviable strength and endurance! They run 110 kilometers through the wild, unspoiled nature of Nuuk. Part of the race takes place at night. Then the sun in Greenland shines almost the same as during the day. So runners can easily see the road and their rivals.
The big advantage of all these competitions and one of the reasons that attract thousands of athletes there is nature! The incredible, wild, stunning nature of Greenland!
