Bermuda is known worldwide for mysterious stories of ship wreckages. Ships clashed with reefs and went down to the depths of the sea. A bright light in the distance was saving the ships and helped them avoid reefs. It was Nibbs Hill Lighthouse. It was installed on May 1, 1846.

Gibbs Hill Lighthouse is located in Southampton County. Shipwrecks did not stop, but ships moored in the ports of Bermuda more often. And lament for the dead was heard less.

First, a kerosene lamp was used as a source of light. It gave light, but it was not so bright. Besides, it took a lot of fuel. In the 19th century, this light was replaced with a rotating lens. There was a 100-kilowatt lamp. Now, even planes can see Gibbs Hill lighthouse from an altitude from 120 miles to 1000 feet. The lighthouse creates a romantic atmosphere in mysterious Bermuda ...

Of course, the lighthouse is no longer the main reference point. Modern ships use GPS systems. But we are talking about the Bermuda Triangle, electricity can disappear, and navigation programs can break down…  And the old Gibbs Hill lighthouse still shows the way.

You can come to the top of the lighthouse. The balcony offers amazing views! It is worth to climb all 185 steps. The lighthouse was built on a hill 245 feet above sea level. And the tower is 117 feet. It is the best viewpoint in Bermuda. Locals and numerous tourists admire that view, couples organize secret dates here. Even people of royal families adored it. So, on the territory of the lighthouse, you can see a bronze plate. It says that Queen Elizabeth II stayed here.
