In your opinion, how ancient churches look like? Tall buildings richly decorated with glass windows and beautiful frescoes. So, they look breathtaking. You do not believe that people built them many centuries ago.
The Old Devonshire Church looks completely different. The first building of 1624, surrounded by palm trees and tall tropical bushes, was the feature of Bermuda architecture. It was low, solid, made of cedar. Unfortunately, in 1715, it was destroyed by a severe hurricane. A year later, people restored it. But the cathedral has an unfortunate destiny. In 1970, it burned down because of arson.
New construction was built on the historic site of the church, looking exactly like an old building. It is a low, small house. It is more a residential cottage than a religious building.
The interior of the cathedral is rather interesting. For example, the altar is decorated not with religious scenes, but with various images of hearts and lilies. These symbols in Bermuda signify the love and purity of thoughts. Most of the decoration is made of cedar. Till the 19th century, it was growing in the islands.
The cathedral has ancient relics. Among them, you can find crosses and jewelry for church books made of silver in 1590.
Around the church, there is a large cemetery. It is very unusual - a green lawn, white tombstones. Everything is very concise, anything extra. So, people come here not just relax but also conduct wedding ceremonies.
