Until a few years ago, no one could have imagined the future popularity of the old Metelkova Street in the Slovenian capital Ljubljana. Named after the Roman Catholic priest Fran Metelko, this ordinary city street attracted the attention of the Austro-Hungarian military leaders. They set up their military headquarters in seven small buildings on the street. Later, they were replaced for a fairly short time by the barracks of the Yugoslav People's Army. The abandoned military buildings were chosen by the creative youth of Ljubljana. They asked the local authorities to give them empty spaces so that they can use them as creative workshops and exhibition halls. Even though the city authorities agreed, everything was much more complicated. Thus, it remains an open problem.

Today, the colorful Metelkova Street is considered a fashionable and popular place among locals and advanced travelers and one of the most touristy streets in Europe. The street provides refuge and an appreciative audience for artists and musicians, students and activists, various minority groups. It hosts temporary exhibitions by young artists, masters of contemporary art, musical and theatrical performances, various protest campaigns against discrimination, and many other events.

At first, the area of 12,5 thousand square meters seems to be chaotic and messy. But it is just an amazing creative atmosphere that can not be found in any other part of modern European Slovenia. The legendary Metelkova Street is a center of alternative culture. Even the building of the former military prison has been rebuilt into a student hostel. It is also very symbolic: the building that once served as a place of incarceration became a representation of freedom and a manifestation of a free spirit, loyalty to every person regardless of race, religion, or sexual orientation.
