Mysterious mountain peaks have attracted adventure seekers throughout history. Some people were attracted to hidden treasures, some – to food and shelter, and others were eager for adventure, conquering the highest points of the planet and receiving a fantastic view as a reward. Mountaineering as a sport and active recreation originated in 1786 after the Swiss doctor Michel Gabriel Paccard had conquered the Mont Blanc peak.
The development of mountaineering in Slovenia began more than 125 years ago. At the same time, about 300 mountaineering societies were merged into the newly formed Slovenian Association of Mountaineers and Mountain Enthusiasts. Today, the Slovenian association owns more than 180 mountain posts, where every mountain climber can find shelter, get hot food and gain strength and energy before the ascent. No doubt there is nothing better than hearing stories of climbing and conquering peaks from the mountaineers themselves, sitting by the fire with a cup of tea, and then, having taken your equipment in the morning, go up to conquer the mountain peaks yourself. But those who are not fond of this dangerous sport can still indulge in learning the culture and history of mountaineering in Slovenia. They just need to go to the picturesque village of Mojstrana and visit the famous Slovenian Alpine Museum.
Founded by local mountaineers, the museum stores its collections in a small two-story building. It comprises an old helicopter, the first one of the mountain rescue service, which hangs under the very ceiling of the building. Several exhibits demonstrate the development of skis, gear, and equipment for climbers and mountaineers. There is also a small room imitating a mountain hut, where every visitor can feel what a night thunderstorm in the Alps is. Other exhibitions are dedicated to the geology, flora, and fauna of the Slovenian Alps. Thousands of photographs complement the fascinating museum tours, and the introductory documentary "Mountain Lights" immerses visitors in mesmerizing landscapes and a fabulous alpine atmosphere.
