Up and down with a level difference of up to 300 meters, 22 tunnels, and 5 bridges. The legendary Sargan Eight, more than 15 kilometers long, has long ceased to be a strategically important railway for Serbia and has become a popular tourist attraction. Covered with a colorful carpet of fragrant flowers in summer and white fluffy snow in winter, fabulous landscapes pass the windows of the wooden carriages of the good old steam locomotive. A fascinating attraction, like a time machine, takes visitors back to the past, making the older generation feel nostalgic, and the young – to get acquainted with the unique historical heritage.

The construction of a narrow-gauge track between the Serbian town of Mokra Gora and the Sargan Pass began in 1916. The implementation of an ambitious but complex project lasted almost 10 years. High mountain gorges, dangerous rocky cliffs, and many other various obstacles stood in the way of talented engineers. It took more than 20 tunnels to be dug and 5 bridges to be thrown for the first steam locomotive to take it in 1925. The road, 58 kilometers long, was named "Eight".

Today, one of the "Seven Serbian Wonders", the Sargan Eight, is a popular tourist trail with a length of 15.5 kilometers. The official opening of the track took place in 2003, after about 5 years of restoration work and about 30 years after it was decided to close it. Since then, 3 retro trains with wooden passenger carriages have been running daily along the scenic route. They stop at 4 stations: Mokra Gora, Jatare, Golubici, and Sargan Vitasi. Once a week, the locomotives enter the territory of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

You can get acquainted with the history of the Sargan Eight, see old photographs in the underground passage that leads to the platform in Mokra Gora. The Golubici station deserves special attention, as there is the scenery for the famous film by Emir Kusturica "Life Is a Miracle". And the longest of all the 22 tunnels is "Alexander I", named after King Alexander I Karadordevic of Yugoslavia.
