Today, few people remember all the events of the Second World War and the horror of those days when more than 3,000 civilians were shot in the Serbian city of Kragujevac. It happened on October 21, 1941. Among the many victims of women and men, there were 300 children, the local school students. In memory of these tragic events, a huge memorial park with an area of 350 hectares was laid out throughout the entire territory of the Sumarice district, where the massacre of innocent people took place.

The Sumarice Memorial Park was created in 1953 by the famous Serbian architects Mihajlo Mitrovic and Radivoje Tomic. Since then, local sculptors and painters have expressed their pain and sadness in abstract forms by erecting 12 monuments and sculptural groups of various materials. All of them are dedicated to the events of October 21, but the most striking sculpture is the monument to the fallen students and their teachers. It is named "Broken Wings" and looks like a huge V. It was created by the famous Yugoslav monumentalist Miodrag Zivkovic in 1963. "The Man Without Illusions" and "One Hundred for One" are equally impressive. There is also a monument named "Circles", which is dedicated to the people of Croatia. Created in 1981 by the talented sculptor Vojin Bakic, it consists of several silver disks, closely pressed together.

Shortly after the creation of the Sumarice Memorial Park, in 1976, the original red brick museum building appeared on its territory and became the heart of this place. It is presented in the form of thirty towers of different heights and displays photographs and documents of the victims, as well as their letters to relatives, written in the last minutes of their lives.

Every year, at the "Broken Wings" monument, there is a demonstration called "the Great School Time". On this day, the national anthem is played in the park, wreaths are laid, and local dramatic actors arrange touching readings of letters and stories.
