October Revolution Square, Teatralnaya Square, Main City Square… No matter how many names the central square of Krasnodar has changed, it is still the most popular tourist attraction in the capital of Southern Russia and the venue for all the significant city events. With an area of about 2.5 hectares, Teatralnaya Square (Theater Square) is considered the largest in Krasnodar. It is located in the historic city center, surrounded by monuments of ancient and modern architecture.
Its hallmark is a delightful light and music fountain, which has become a favorite place among citizens and tourists. At the time of its construction, the legendary fountain was considered the largest in Europe (its area is 2500 square meters), created according to the so-called "dry" technology: there are no basins, nozzles are mounted directly into the pedestrian zone.
One side of Theater Square is decorated with modern buildings of the City Duma and the Municipal Concert Hall, the other side – with the oldest hospital in the city, which is a unique architectural monument of the early 19th century with a church and a chapel. Hard to believe, but this almshouse-hospital started operating in 1842, and in 1914, it was visited by the last Russian Emperor Nicholas II. Despite the significance and historical value of the old hospital, the main attraction of the square is the Krasnodar Academic Drama Theater named after Maxim Gorky. That is why the square is called Teatralnaya (Theater). In 2020, the main center of cultural life celebrated its centenary, and opened its hundredth season with the famous performance based on Mikhail Lermontov's play "Masquerade".
The atmosphere of the old square beckons passers-by to stop, enjoy architectural monuments and a spectacular performance of the musical fountain, wander under the flags of Krasnodar Krai, proudly fluttering in the warm southern winds, or just breathe fresh air, give a smile to the friendly citizens and take a happy selfie, while standing in a place with a rich history, the real symbol of Krasnodar.
