Reginald’s Tower
Waterford and surrounding
Castles, Fortresses, Towers
Castles, Fortresses, Towers

This most ancient city tower looks like the ordinary round and not so high building made of stone. The facade of the tower does not even give a hint about what is kept inside. And the tower is not only the largest historic archive of Ireland but the part of ancient protective constructions, which have been conserved after all the time. And it is also the oldest civil building in Ireland, the only monument from the Vikings’ times.

Reginald’s Tower was built in Waterford in the 12th century. It withstood a lot of battles and wars and had a lot of proprietors. For its long history, the tower was a prison, a weapons warehouse, a royal residence. Aldo, it was used as a shelter, people hid there during the bombardments.  The round tower is named in honor of one of the city rulers, who, by the way, was Viking. Its name was changed a little and differs from the original.

The tower has several floors. Do not think that you will examine all the areas in a fast way. The tower looks small, but it is very spacious. And the main part of the Ireland historic documents are kept there. You can easily find all the necessary information about the life of the first Irishmen – just come to the spiral staircase and pay attention to the walls. Some of the ancient buildings’ interesting models, ancient letters with drawings, prints and monarchs’ signature are also presented in the tower. One of the manuscripts, kept in the museum, is related to the Carl 1st Epoque.
