The entrance to the Tetemvá cemetery in Miskolc has beautifully carved gates. Here, in 1698, was placed a wooden church. In was rebuilt several times, and in 1938, the designer Bálint Szehalmi made a new project of a church look. It was successfully installed, but in 1997 somebody burned it. Only two years later the building was restored with the help of public donations. In the year 2000, the designer was buried at the church. That year the church got a new organ, completing the ensemble of church art.

In the Middle Ages, the city Miskolz consisted of two quarters. The channel, running along the Kossuth street, separated Old and New cities, based in the 15th century. The common burying place of the quarters was the cemetery Tetemvár. At the beginning of the 17th century, the citizens of the two cities were dying because of the plague, storming in Miskolc. All of them were placed in a common grave of Tetemvár.

For the first time, the church was mentioned in historical documents in the year 1698. That year “the place for divine service on the cemetery” was faced with tiles. In 1727 the locals replaced it by a church made of oak beams. The wooden version was used just for the public worship between 1785 and 1808 years, while all the burying ceremonies took the place on a Kossuth street.

The next decades the church was in a bad condition, it even could be crushed down. But the government did not possess the sum for its restoring. The citizens cherished the church, and in 1882, one of them, István Bató, left a huge sum of money for its permanent renovation. The idea of the citizens was realized. “This church should be maintained in its best condition every year… If it would be burnt, build it of soil, wood, and plates”, says the will of the year 1882.
