Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is the main sanctuary of the Roman-Catholic Diocese of Kaposvár. That is the third building in that place, which is located in the main square of the city. The first house of worship looked like an ordinary wooden building, made in 1702. The builders partly used the materials of the destroyed castle in Kaposvár. According to historians’ data, the wooden church was 27 steps long and 19 steps wide but was abolished in the middle of the century because of the poor state. 12 years of work later, ib 1748, the builders constructed a new church. The baroque-styled cathedral, made of stone and initially devoted to the Holy Trinity, was the main place for the Catholic community meetings. He was open more than the century.

The construction of the Assumption Cathedral is connected with the popular movement, scale supported by the parish priest Ferenc Uyvari. Owing to him, at the end of 1883, the section of art and the Middle Ages of the Hungarian Society of Engineers and Architects organized the committee evaluating the construction plans. That time it was also decided that the church could be built on the plans of Otto Tandor from Budapest.

During the construction, beginning in 1885 and finishing a year later, on weekdays the service took place in the neighboring monastery chapel, on Sundays and holidays – in the small temporary building located nearby. That place was marked with the cross made of stone by the noble Fris Kerubin, today it is kept on the territory of the cathedral.

Electric lighting was installed in the church in 1900, the organ was renovated in 1927, and the sacristy was enlarged in 1931 and several years later was modernized from outside. On the occasion of the Memorial Year of St. Stephen, on the southern wall was installed the well, dedicated to that. In 1958, the church got a new organ, and in 1969 the building was completely renovated.
