The monastery is located in the city of Serres and is considered as one of the most ancient in Macedonia. The monastery was built in the second part of the 13th century, it was very popular among Byzantine emperors from the very beginning of its existence. Owing to the emperors’ attention and its donations, the stuff could enlarge the small building and turn it to the monastery center, which still functions today.
The area of the monastery is rather huge, it consists of several constructions, including the ancient ones. Almost all of them are painted with ancient frescos, decorated with mosaics and inscriptions on Greek. On the territory, there is the ancient plumbing, and monks still use this water. A small stream of water tricks and hits the ancient stone, the echo of water’s murmuring can be heard in all the ancient constructions. It is merging with the signing of birds… It seems that the time has stopped there…
All of the buildings and passages in the monastery are made of stone, low arched passages and narrow corridors make an impression that people were transported to the 13th or the 15th century…
On the territory is placed a small museum, which tells the visitors about the life of those people, who devoted it to God. There are ancient kettles, plates, and irons of wood or copper, and all of them are handmade.
If you come to the temple, you can see the images of saints, the frescos are painted everywhere, but it does not reduce the space or makes the building look bad. On the contrary, it makes the impression that exactly in this place a man can become a part of something inspiring and beautiful, and it is very important not to lose this opportunity. Icons are a special thing, many of them are so ancient that some pieces of wood are even cracked. But it does not diminish their beauty and the sense of inspiration…
Timos Prodromos Monastery is a must-see place in Serres, even for those, who do not believe in God.
