Clausholm Castle – one of the main historical Denmark sights, a perfect example of a Baroque style, is placed close to Randers in the estuary of Gudenå. It was firstly mentioned in the 14th century. The owner of the castle was Lage Ovesen, one of the main figures in a rebellion against Valdemar IV. That time it was a strengthened building, surrounded by a moat.
In the 17th century, the destroying building was bought by Conrad von Reventlow, the great Dutch chancellor. The restoration of the castle was made by an architect Ernst Brandenburger. The planning of Clausholm suited the rank of the chancellor. He lived on the first floor and the second one was functioning as a floor for royal guests. That is why the decoration on the floors was different.
For 1718-1730 years, the castle was the propriety of Frederic IV. He ordered to change the interior and garden the outer part. In the 18th century, there were placed nice fountains and beautiful alleys.
The most part of its existence the castle did not have access to the plumbing and electricity, which made it a summer residence. But in 1964 new owners of the castle – Henrick and Ruth Berner – modernized their house and Clausholm got a second wind.
The restoration work made by the new owners we can call a feat because this historical building did not change since 1730. There was a lot of work, and it required a lot of effort and delicacy to the monument.
The successful attempts of the Berner’s family were rewarded. In 1994, Queen Margrethe gave a prize Europa Nostra for the keeping of the heritage.
In 2009 the park of the castle was completely renovated. Now we can enjoy the view of a gorgeous Baroque building, surrounded by a park with well-groomed alleys and beautiful fountains.
