Karlovy Vary is the Czech "capital of colonnades". They are built directly above the thermal springs: so drinking therapy is comfortably combined with a quiet walk. Besides, covered galleries provide all-season protection from the weather. It is also a pleasant architectural setting of resort promenades.
In total, the city has four colonnades and one pavilion built over the hottest spring.
The garden colonnade with the Snake spring was designed by Viennese architects Fellner and Helmer. At the end of the 19th century, it served as a covered promenade to the Village pavilion that was dismantled in the middle of the 20th century. But the cast-iron openwork colonnade still stands today. It can be found on the left bank of the Tepla River, in the center of the spa area of Karlovy Vary.
The Mill colonnade with 124 Corinthian columns is the largest in the resort. It brings together the springs of the Rock, Mill, Mermaid, Prince Václav, and Libuse. There is a separate pavilion next to the Freedom spring. The long colonnade in neo-Renaissance style was built in 1871-1881 by the architect Josef Zitek, who designed the building of the National Theater and Rudolfinum in Prague. The colonnade's balustrade is decorated with sculptures symbolizing the 12 months.
The Market colonnade is a festive, carved wooden gallery in the Swiss style. It covers the Market, Lower castle and Charles IV springs. According to a legend, the Czech king, after whom the city is named, treated sore feet at the springs where the Market colonnade stands today.
The Upper castle spring gurgles in the Castle colonnade located just above the Market spring. The colonnade consists of two parts – the upper one is open to everyone, and the lower one can only be accessed by visitors of the Spa center "Castle Lazne".
Finally, the heart of the Karlovy Vary resort is the Vrzidlo spring ("Geyser") with a temperature of 73.4 °C. This is the warmest mineral spring in the Czech Republic, whose water rises to a height of 12 m. It is not located under a colonnade. Vrzidlo has a "Palace" – an indoor glass pavilion. In a minute, this geyser "gives out" 2000 liters of water.
