Small, old, original but always noisy and crowded, Mostar is one of the most popular tourist cities in Bosnia and Herzegovina. For a long time, it was under the rule of the Ottoman Empire, hence the ancient mosques in the Ottoman style, and the old arched bridge built by the Ottoman Turks over the main waterway of the state, the Neretva River. Mostar is so cozy and friendly that it has long become a favorite holiday destination for Europeans who come here for weekends. And although you can see all the important local attractions in just a day, it is better to stay a little longer: walk across the Old Bridge, promenade in the cobbled streets of the Old City, sit at a table in one of the cafes, try Bosnian burek with spinach, and then go to the holy places – the ancient Ottoman mosques.
Mostar keeps many monuments of sacred architecture. Throughout the day, you are followed by the melodious voices of muezzins calling to prayer. Regardless of religion, everyone should undoubtedly visit the mosques, especially the medieval stone Mosque of Koski Mehmed Pasa, one of the main attractions of Mostar.
The mosque stands on the picturesque bank of the Neretva River and is buried in verdure of age-old trees and ancient colorful houses that cover the winding streets of the city like beads. Named after its founder, the Turkish ruler Koski Mehmed Pasa, the magnificent monument of Ottoman architecture was built in 1617. The single structure of the building and a roof not supported by columns was a real breakthrough in the Middle Ages and a standard for Islamic architecture in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Later, the mosque was expanded with a madrasa, becoming a Muslim cultural center. Despite the numerous destructions, the mosque has survived to this day. Besides, it is listed as the UNESCO World Heritage Site and is open to the public. Another notable feature of the mosque is a small courtyard with a charming garden and a fountain for ablution. But nothing can compare to the fabulous view of the Old Bridge that opens from the mosque at sunset.
