During our trip to Austria, we have already visited at least 10 castles and a couple of lakes, walked in the mountains and national parks, and even went on a toboggan run. But I assure you, there is another place that will surprise you! And this is the Hallein Salt mine.
This place is creepy and cool at the same time. It is not suitable for those who are afraid of confined spaces, because you will have to go deep underground. Once upon a time, the world's ocean splashed there. Then the water receded, but the salt remained in the ground. The surrounding wooded slopes were chosen by the ancient Celts as their habitat. It was they who started mining there.
All the details of this process can be found in the film which is shown to curious tourists at the very beginning of the tour of the mine. The work was difficult and dangerous, requiring great physical strength and courage. Scenes from the life of miners are recreated in the depths of the mine, but first, you need to get there.
The descent to the depths of the salt deposits is very exciting. However, it is extremely important to observe safety precautions. After you put on special suits over your clothes to avoid getting dirty, you will get on an open train and the adventure will begin...
The tunnel through which it rushes almost vertically down is quite narrow, so tourists are warned not to get up, so as not to get seriously injured. However, there is no need to do this, since from all sides there is a stunning view of the illuminated mine niches.
The main attraction of the tour is an underground lake of incredible beauty! You can take a ride on a wooden ferry, but first, you need to get to it, and this is also a whole adventure. You will descend using wooden toboggans, after which you will find yourself deep underground on the border of Austria and Germany.
Even on the hottest days, the thermometer does not rise above 7 degrees. Therefore, you should have warm clothes with you, so that the tour will be comfortable.
A trip to the depths of a salt mine is a very vivid experience that you will undoubtedly remember for a long time!
