While vacationing in Soyapango, it is worth getting to the old Ilopango airport. Until the 70s of the last century, it was the country's main air harbor. Today it is considered the cultural heritage of El Salvador.
Now on the territory of the former airport is a fascinating Aviation Museum. To see a large number of interesting exhibits, to touch old planes and helicopters, to study the history of aircraft construction and even to look into the future - all this is possible in the Aviation Museum.
This museum is quite young. It was opened in 2001 on the initiative of the heads of military aviation. And in just a few years, the museum has become a favorite place not only among local boys but also tourists.
The Aviation Museum is really big! It has 10 halls with permanent exhibits and three halls for temporary exhibitions. Besides, once-active aircraft are represented in open areas: from tiny helicopters to combat aircraft.
One of the rooms is dedicated to Enrico Massi, the first pilot and military aviation instructor in El Salvador. There are documents, personal belongings, and photos of the legendary pilot.
Four exhibition halls are dedicated to military aviation. They contain not only historical documents, but also old equipment, special devices for flights, and weapons.
The museum also has separate collections of personal belongings of famous pilots and designers who have contributed to the development of aviation in El Salvador. There you can see how the uniforms of military and civilian pilots changed and how flight maps changed, and compare the security tools of the beginning of the last century and modern ones.
Of course, in the open-air museum, you can both see the presented aircraft models and sit in the cockpit. So you can imagine the conditions in which brave pilots had to work many decades ago.
