Actually, the city of Santa Ana is an extremely unusual place. There are three volcanoes at the same time, and none of them is dormant. Each of these volcanoes erupts periodically, but fortunately, the eruptions are not violent. They do not harm the residents of the city but attract a huge number of tourists.
The highest and most colorful volcano in the city is Santa Ana. It is also the highest point of the country (2,385 meters) offering magnificent views of both the crater and the city and the nature around it. Thanks to modern facilities and infrastructures created by locals, the trip to the volcano has turned from a difficult path to a pleasant and relatively short walk.
Usually, the trip starts from the national park located at the foot of the volcano. The ascent onto the mountain is only possible in a group headed by experienced guides and military.
The path to the crater is not too difficult. Locals have chosen not only a beautiful but also a quite convenient route running through several flat areas so that tourists can relax there. As a rule, the trip takes about four hours of slow walking, but if you need stopping to eat or take beautiful photos, the guides will happily agree to make a stop.
A sign that the crater of the volcano is very close is the pungent smell of sulfur. It is found in the lake located inside the volcanic crater. The landscape as much incredibly beautiful as dangerous: it is forbidden to go down to the lake because it is, in simple phrase, poisonous. Moreover, the guides do not advise staying at the top for more than an hour because sulfur fumes, even in such a small amount, is harmful for the human body. Usually, this amount of time is more than enough to admire the natural beauty, take a view of the neighboring two volcanoes which are perfectly visible from this height, take photos of the emerald lake and relax a bit before descending.
