Pigeon Island

COM_SCATALOG_FIELD_DESCRIPTION

This is an island, or a concentration of historical sites, or a nature reserve. Pigeon Island is all of it. And it is the most popular location for wedding ceremonies for the residents of Saint Lucia. It is not surprising because the island is very beautiful and romantic. Each leaf and pebble are nice.

It is an island with a colorful history. Pirates hid their treasures here. They say they still live in the caves of the island. And before their settlement, the island was a place of sea observing. The British watched the actions of the French army from here.

Ruins, stones, cannons, old structures - Pigeon Island is full of these historical monuments. You can easily find a stone of an ancient fort or have a picnic next to the destroyed communications station, climbing a hill.

The first observation constructions were built in the 18th century. English Admiral George Rodney found out that from the height of the Signal Peak he can see not just an island but some kilometers of the sea. But, with years, the island was left by the military. During the Second World War, the Americans installed a communications station here. And then – nothing! Constructions were destroying and turning into the ruins. The strategic buildings became just stones.

But it gives Pigeon Island some charm. Photographers and brides love it for beautiful views, contrasting with the ruins.

Another sight of the island is its nature. Rainforests and hills are amazing! At the end of the 20th century, there was established the National Park. You can walk along the hills with paths and nice hiking trails and admire the variety of flora and fauna.

Initially, the island was separated from the other St. Lucia part. But people could get there only by boat.

Now the island is connected with St. Lucia by an embankment, called “the bridge” for its resemblance. This name confuses tourists a lot because travelers are trying to find a bridge. A walk along the dam can be very exciting and memorable. You can meet your favorite actor or actress. The embankment is the most fashionable district area of the island. There are located expensive hotels where the rich and famous people take a rest.
