The clock is rapidly approaching midnight. The sun is setting, ready to give the reins of power to the moon. A moment or two later, and Puerto Rico will be enveloped in impenetrable darkness, illuminated only by the headlights of a bus. First, on the bus, then on the boat, and you are in complete darkness, drowning in the warm sand. And around is Spanish speech. You are asked to board a boat. You look at the sky, full of stars. You look into the water, and there is … magic.
The island of Vieques in Mosquito Bay is named after the ship “El Mosquito”, which belonged to a severe but noble pirate. On this island, you can believe in miracles. Yes, everything has a scientific explanation. But all the logical arguments disappear when you see the shining water. The oar leaves a flickering trace. You dip it into the ocean, and every drop of water glows with a bright bluish color. And the fish! It is also sparkling!
You pass your fingers through the water, and it seems that you get some incredible magical power. Marvelous! It delights so much! You have a desire to completely immerse yourself into this natural magic. Unfortunately, swimming in Mosquito Bay is prohibited. But you can admire it!
Puerto Rico's Mosquito Bay has the highest concentration of bioluminescent plankton in the world. It is not the only luminous place on Earth, but definitely the largest and most impressive one. On average, four liters of water contains 700,000 luminous microorganisms. During the day it is an ordinary bay with a beautiful beach, and at night - another universe.
It is better not to go on an excursion during the full moon. At this time, plankton are not so active. And the moon shines too brightly. You risk not seeing the magic in all its beauty.
At night, the water in the bay glows with an unnatural light. The Spaniards, who had just settled on the island, were scared by this. They believed that this light is from evil, made by Satan. The place was considered cursed. People wanted even to cut the way to the bay off.
They piled the mouth of the canal, connecting the bay with the ocean, with huge boulders. Either the devil was powerful, either the beauty of the bay is stronger than the curse, but people continued to come there. The enclosure of the bay became an advantage. Plankton was developing more actively. The number of luminous microorganisms has increased.
