“Is this real?”, “Are We on Earth?” - you ask yourself visiting the crystal caves in the Cayman Islands. You have goosebumps because you are underground, and huge sharp stones hang from above!
It is scary, but also interesting and inspiring! This otherworldly landscape amazes you so much. For several hundred thousand years, nature was growing these stalactites and stalagmites. Water, drop by drop, was forming sharp needles of crystals. Both above and below. And when you come to the underground lake, artificially illuminated, blue and clear, you feel uneasy. It seems that magical creatures live here!
The road to Crystal Caves runs through rainforests. First, you need to stop, leaning against the wooden railing at the entrance to the cave. Peer into the forest. Listen to the noise of the tropical jungle. Look at a parrot or other exotic birds, and long lianas.
But it is time to go down underground! Be careful, watch the steps, and follow a guide. It is colder down below, but do not take a hat. The temperature is comfortable, better than in the hot jungle.
Step by step, meter by meter, you pass from one grotto to another. By the way, it is the bottom of the ancient sea! When the tectonic plates were moving, this part of the Cayman Islands rose above sea level. The water was flowing and formed large stone halls. You can even see prints of ancient fish or shells.
And the beautiful crystals were made by rainwater, which was seeping through the ground and eroding the limestone.
Look down. What if something sparkles, for example, a pirate treasure? It is not a secret that severe pirates were hiding their treasures in the caves, and it was one of them.
