It is beautiful but severe, picturesque but you should try a lot to get there, deserted but inhabited by a huge colony of birds. That is Henderson Island.

That is the largest island in the entire Pitcairn island group. The waves of the Pacific Ocean break on the coastal cliffs every minute. The island is not so welcoming to strangers as other islands. It repels the tourists by its high waves and the abundance of coral reefs. Though it can even attract by the second one. 

Overcoming obstacles and coming to the island, you understand that it has a volcanic origin. There are 3 underwater volcanoes, and, according to the latest data, they are active. They are still very young - only about 13 million years old. The island also has 3 beautiful beaches, and it is covered with green plants and shrubs. Be ready to constantly slip and drown in the sand. The island consists of limestone. That is why people could not live there for a long time. The soil is unsuitable for farming. The British government even had an idea to build a strip, but these plans were also declined because of the baneful influence on Henderson’s ecosystem.

When you come to Henderson Island, you should know that it is the “UNESCO World Heritage Area”. This piece of limestone in the Pacific Ocean got such a status because of rare birds. Almost all the species can be described as “lives only on Henderson”. It is true because most of them cannot be found anywhere in the world. They are so bright and resonant. The island is drowning in bird songs. There you can see a fruit pigeon, a spotted crake, a hermit Lori, living only in Henderson.

However, every year, in addition to birds signing, the island is drowning more and more in the garbage. The ocean throws up to 17 tons of plastic per year on Henderson’s white beaches. The locals are struggling with it as they can. The help of volunteers is also great. You can come there to admire the birds and make a good thing. 

Henderson is full of mysteries and secrets. And it has skeletons in the closet. There are almost no sources of freshwater, just a little spring in one of the caves of the island. The archeologists found there the human remains. In the cave were buried 6 or even 8 bodies.

Its origin has many legends. Somebody is assured that these are the skeletons of the navigator Henderson and his team of sailors. We can suppose that such a small cemetery was made by the Polynesians, who buried the tribesmen. The remains are already taken out, do not worry. But something is left - mysterious petroglyphs on the rocks.
