Beauty is often hidden from our eyes. Beyond the high mountains and dense forests of Papua New Guinea is located the freshwater lake Kutubu. There, among the tropical forests, looking to the landscape, you can feel incredible freedom, calmness, harmony with yourself and with nature. The water is very clean and clear! While fishing, you can see the fish on a distance for a few meters.

To get to the lake is not that easy, it is based at an altitude of about 800 meters. Its area is about 50 km. The lake is surrounded by rocks, wetland forests, and swamps, which are considered as a protected area. Earlier, you could go there on foot, now this path is closed – the road is dangerous and difficult. But you can come by small airplanes. 

Kutubu Lake is one of Papua New Guinea's most spectacular sights, and people will pave the way through the rainforests soon owing to the big number of tourists.

The lake is amazing! You can be impressed more if you go to one of several islands on the lake. The islands look like huge green hats, they are completely covered with trees and shrubs. The largest island is Wasermi. There you can enjoy the beauty of the local fauna.

Close to some boards, there are wooden canoes. These are boats of the local Foe and Fasu tribes. The area around the lake is densely populated, more than 12 villages are located there! Feel free to visit the local tribes, this is also an adventure! You can learn more about living in tribes or the local cuisine. In general, the locals make agriculture and grow sago.

Getting tired after a long trip to the lake, thinking about everything possible, when in front of you the lake surface begins to shine in the sun, you go faster to see the beauty and breathe deeply. It is so easy to do it there, the natural energy fills your body and gives strength.

Around the lake you can see wonderful picturesque views, the water is crystal clear, the forests are dense, the costs are surrounded by green ... The atmosphere is so amazing that the first oil project in Papua New Guinea was named in honor of Lake Kutubu. The development of the project of the same name started in 1992. Owing to it, the region got the oil rigs, and that, in turn, had a positive impact on the local economy and tourism.

However, that popularity has disadvantages. An increase in the tourists’ number led to pollution and destruction of forests, a decline of the fish quantity, and other environmental problems.
