Speaking of the youth, free and creative Seoul, you cannot fail to mention Hongik University. This educational institution gave the city the nearby fashionable region of Hongdae, and the world – the talented South Korean actors, musicians, writers and artists.
Hongik University was founded in the middle of the last century. Since then, it has remained one of the leading private universities in the country. At the beginning of its formation, Hongik was like an ordinary art school. Nevertheless, it developed rather quickly and successfully. Soon, a small art department grew into an Institute of Fine Arts, and several engineering and technical and socio-economic universities were suddenly added to it.
Today, Hongik University comprises 17 undergraduate and 12 postgraduate departments of various specialties. Both creative individuals and inveterate techies enter the university with pleasure. They have a common desire to create, transmit their unique view of the world and make something new, useful and aesthetic. Hongik, in its turn, gives all these opportunities to young and ambitious talents.
The university area is divided into two campuses. The main campus appeared in 1955 in the district of Maphogu on the north bank of the Han River in Seoul. Until now, it has not changed its location. It is the metropolitan campus that comes to mind first when you mention Hongik. The second campus was opened in 1987 in Sejong City.
While walking around Hongik, you can find yourself thinking that you are not in a serious, prestigious institute but an advanced art gallery. There is a creative and inspiring atmosphere around that other universities lack. Here and there you can see intricate images, sculptures, installations and models which are difficult to take your eyes off.
No wonder the dizzying atmosphere of Hongik prevails outside the university – on the streets of Hongdae. It became a breath of fresh air for locals and the main platform for learning contemporary street art.
