Mahant Ghasidas is a museum in Raipur with an exhibition of sculptures, carvings, manuscripts, samples of ancient arms and coins, ethnographic exhibits.
The modern collection started with findings discovered amidst the ancient ruins in Sirpur in 1872.
Raipur became the head of the region. So at the end of the 19th century, it accommodated the Archaeological Survey of India. It was the city where art treasures and antiquities were brought to be stored. The museum was established in 1875 by Raja Mahant Ghasidas, the King of the Rajnandgaon principality. It was the first museum of the Chhattisgarh state and one of the first ten to open in India.
Today, Mahant Ghasidas is a huge culture and education center. Here, researches in the fields of history, archeology and cultural science are conducted. The museum hosts a profound collection of sculptures and carvings of stone and metal. The exhibits of ceramics prove that in ancient times these Indian lands were engaged in trade with Rome and other civilizations of the past.
Numerous items carved of stone with surgical precision are devoted to Hindu gods. Shiva, Vishnu or Brahma cut out of solid rocks and displayed in the halls among other more trivial things make one wonder about how imposing those gods looked in ancient temples that hosted them initially.
It usually takes visitors two or three hours to complete the tour of the halls. The museum occupies an area of approximately two hectares: in addition to a spacious museum building, guests can visit a lush museum garden.
When getting ready for a visit to the treasury of art antiques Mahant Ghasidas, it is worth drawing a map and planning the itinerary. Although the museum is located in the city center, tourists go here more often than the local citizens. So you will reach the building faster if you follow the map and not the advice of the locals. You can reach the museum using transport going to Ghadi Chowk, the central area of Raipur. The City Clock Tower can be your reference point.
