Lake Natron
Arusha and surrounding
Rivers, Lakes
Rivers, Lakes

We are all used to the fact that lakes are usually blue, dark blue, green, but there is a red lake near the city of Arusha in Tanzania. Already on the road, you may get the feeling that you are going to the sea. The surrounding air will be just as salty.

Salt Lake Natron is located in northern Tanzania at an altitude of 600 meters above sea level. There are hills lightly covered with green and grayish-brown earth all around. A beautiful, nay, peaceful landscape, but only if you do not look at the lake itself. It is not even the size of the lake that is frightening, but its color: from saturated red to dark purple. This color is created by numerous bacteria that live in the waters of this unusual lake.

In the wild, bright colors mean danger. Lake Natron confirms this. You want to enter the reddish water at least up to your ankles and take stunning photos, but this kind of bathing can cause burns and blisters on your skin. The lake is not only salty but also alkaline. It is fed by the waters of the Southern Ewaso Ng'iro River. The water gradually evaporates, but the minerals remain. They settle on the bottom, giving the water an unusual shade, and protecting it from unwanted guests.

The lake is not lifeless. There are even fish there, for example, alkaline tilapia. It can be found on the outskirts of the lake, near hot springs, where the water is 30-40 degrees. Surprisingly, many plants on the shore grow well, feeding on the waters of the poisonous lake. But the most amazing thing is the birds! There are about 100 thousand of them here. Most of them are small flamingos. According to scientists, birds come to the lake because there are no predators that can attack and eat them.

The view of the lake is impressive! Here you experience very strong emotions as if you are on another planet. It's like going to Mars and admiring a huge local reservoir.
