It may sound surprising, but Praia is one of the African festival capitals. Bright musical events take place here every month. Some of them are known only among residents, while others gather people from all over the world.
The international Kriol Jazz Festival, holding annually in April, is one of such events.
The first Kriol Jazz Festival took place in 2008. That time, it was not such a famous event. Only local groups were its participants. But a year later, performers from France came to Praia. Gradually, the geography of those who want to perform on the festival stage has grown and today, jazz artists from Europe, America, and the Caribbean come here every year.
When the creators got the idea of the festival, they wanted to spread knowledge about the Creole culture, which, in their opinion, originated in Cape Verde. It is very original and differs from African and European traditions, although it was formed at their junction. Music has always been an integral part of Creole life. That is why organizers chose this music as the main component of the big holiday, though the Kriol Jazz Festival includes exhibitions, lectures, and presentations.
For four days, Praia turns into the international capital of jazz, where experienced performers share their skills with beginners, and young authors boldly show their non-standard vision of their favorite music.
Almost every day, after the concert that gathers thousands of spectators, people organize after-parties, when guests can speak to artists, get autographs, take photos, and listen to their songs that are not included in the main festival program.
The atmosphere of creativity and unity makes Praia a fabulous city filled with music and happiness these feast days.
